ItemCompliance of clinical instructors in nursing schools to Republic Act 7164(School of Nursing, Ateneo de Davao University, 2000-03) Cadeña, Melinda GranadaAbstract: Republic Act (RA) 7164 known as The Philippine Nursing Act of 1991 includes provision requiring faculty members in schools of nursing to be masters degree holder. This is intended to raise the standard of teaching efficiency to bring about effective and wholesome learning. To determine the compliance of clinical instructors in nursing schools to RA 7164 this descriptive and correlational study was conducted. Specifically, it attempts to find out the relationship between the learner, teacher and environment to the compliance. All part-time and full-time clinical instructors who are not masters degree holder and employed for school year 1999-2000 in the five colleges of nursing in Davao City namely Brokenshire College, Davao Doctors College, Mindanao Medical Foundation College, San Pedro College and Tecarro College Foundation, Inc. were provided with a pretested questionnaire. After subjecting the data to simple percentage, mean, weighted mean and multiple logistic regression, it was found out that only twenty (20) out of the total (53) clinical instructors complied with the mandate. Among the different variables, only age and employer's support were related to compliance. Not statistically significant were factors such as civil status, monthly income, employment status, number of dependent household members, length of service, other roles taken aside from clinical instruction, level of awareness, degree of motivation, graduate school teachers' quality and quantity, phsical set-up and support of family. This study recommends that clinical instructors be encouraged to enroll early in life since younger age group may have lesser responsibilities and more time available to pursue graduate studies. Schools should support their clinical instructors financially as their present average monthly income cannot meet their needs for masteral study.

ItemFormative structured feedback: its effects on quality nursing care : its effects on quality nursing care(School of Nursing, Ateneo de Davao University, 2002-10) Concha, Cherry Vi SAbstract: This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of formative structured feedback for improving the quality of nursing care provided by the staff nurses at Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital, particularly in three-skill areas namely: conceptual, technical, and coordinative. Data was obtained from 30-item questionnaires, modified appropriately to suit the local context. Questionnaire A was answered by the twenty staff nurses and questionnaire B was answered by the five supervisors. All thep articipants were female with the tenure range from 3 to 22 years. Pre-expiremental one group pre-test design was conducted in January 2002, with a follow-up in June 2002. A single, non-controlled treatment intervention in the form of formative structured feedback was done to the staffnurses after the pre-evaluation period. Four months after the expirementation, post-evlauation was made to ascertain the effect of the treatment on the quality of nursing care, particularly on the aforementioned dependent variables. The respondents of the study were not informed that they would be re-evaluated after the treatment. Findings of this revealed that there was an increse in the mena scores in the level of performance in all three-skills areas are perceived by the stff nurses and by their supervisors after the expirementation. The mean scores of conceptual, technical, and coordinative skills improved by 10.07%, 6.51%, and 7.92% respectively. Whereas, by the supervisor's perception, the mean scores of conceptual, technical, and coordinative skills increased by 17.38%, 10.88%, and 18.98%, respectively. The outcome of the expirementation created a statisitcally significant incresed in the quality of nursing care both perceived by the staff nurses themselves and by their supervisors. Consequently, the Davoa Oriental Provincial Hospital administrator must be presuaded to provide regular evaluation on nursing care and re-orientation seminars be integrated to strengthen the quality of nursing care given to clients.

ItemInitiating intravenous fluids a teaching-learning process(School of Nursing, Ateneo de Davao University, 2005-02) Nolasco, Liz Modesta GSummary: Initiating intravenous fluids is widely practiced not just in the hospital setting but also in home health care. Its role in the medical world is vital in saving lives, nurturing individuals, and promoting a healthy environment. In this book, we were introduced to the different devices, its parts and importance in the therapy process. It has given us the options on how to care for the patient and what steps promote comfort while reducing labor and material cost. It also increased our level of awareness as a clinician in delivering quality service and optimum health care. In response to the changes on the Philippine Nursing Act brought about by RA 9173 expectingregistered nurses to be equipped with the knowledge and skills in initiating intravenous fluids, all nurses should be properly trained. It will be advantageous if nursing students can give focus on the topic and enhance skills by doing return demonstration on the initiation of intravenous insertion and access. For the practitioners, it may come naturally and simply because of familiarity. For the patient, this is a basis for fear and anxiety and for the support group, a costly need for health imrovement. For students, this is a subject that is essential to their growth and career path. For the teacher, it is an important topic that needs to be delivered in such a way that it creates an impact to yield a productive ooutput in lifesaving situations. Perceptions may change, their importance to an individual may vary but all have to be onsidered. Initiating intravenous fluids is a complex process that needs to adapt to different circumstances. Clinical importance has been seriously considered in the construction of this book along with the teaching-learning process. This is so because I believe that all knowledge, skills or attitude is transferred. In the course of our lifetime from the moment we set foot in this world everything is taught and acquired.
