Abstract
Abstract: This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of formative structured feedback for improving the quality of nursing care provided by the staff nurses at Davao Oriental Provincial Hospital, particularly in three-skill areas namely: conceptual, technical, and coordinative. Data was obtained from 30-item questionnaires, modified appropriately to suit the local context. Questionnaire A was answered by the twenty staff nurses and questionnaire B was answered by the five supervisors. All thep articipants were female with the tenure range from 3 to 22 years. Pre-expiremental one group pre-test design was conducted in January 2002, with a follow-up in June 2002. A single, non-controlled treatment intervention in the form of formative structured feedback was done to the staffnurses after the pre-evaluation period. Four months after the expirementation, post-evlauation was made to ascertain the effect of the treatment on the quality of nursing care, particularly on the aforementioned dependent variables. The respondents of the study were not informed that they would be re-evaluated after the treatment. Findings of this revealed that there was an increse in the mena scores in the level of performance in all three-skills areas are perceived by the stff nurses and by their supervisors after the expirementation. The mean scores of conceptual, technical, and coordinative skills improved by 10.07%, 6.51%, and 7.92% respectively. Whereas, by the supervisor's perception, the mean scores of conceptual, technical, and coordinative skills increased by 17.38%, 10.88%, and 18.98%, respectively. The outcome of the expirementation created a statisitcally significant incresed in the quality of nursing care both perceived by the staff nurses themselves and by their supervisors. Consequently, the Davoa Oriental Provincial Hospital administrator must be presuaded to provide regular evaluation on nursing care and re-orientation seminars be integrated to strengthen the quality of nursing care given to clients.
