Abstract
The study is grounded on Beth Hudnam Stamm’s Compassion Satisfaction – Compassion Fatigue Model and Pamela Reed’s Theory on Self-Transcendence. It is a descriptive research that sought to determine the relationship between the direct care providers’ professional quality of life and their self-transcendence. There were 124 respondents who were nurses, caregivers, and social workers caring for the elderly in nursing homes in Davao City and Tagum City. With the use of complete enumeration sampling, the researcher distributed survey questionnaires to the direct care providers. The survey questionnaire used had three parts: (1) the demographic profile questionnaire, (2) the Professional Quality of Life questionnaire, and (3) the Self-Transcendence Scale questionnaire. The results were analyzed using frequency and distribution, Pearson-r, and multiple regression analysis. Findings show that professional quality of life has a significant relationship with self-transcendence. The factors that significantly determine self-transcendence were age, religion, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress, of which the latter two are components of compassion fatigue.
